Program Description
The COP offers the Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree, which is a 2 + 4 program. Students must complete 2 years of pre-professional study, which includes general education courses as well as prescriptive courses in biology, chemistry, physics, and math. This is followed by 4 years in the COP at SWOSU in the professional Pharm.D. program, which includes didactic and experiential courses in the pharmaceutical sciences and pharmacy practice as well as a final year of full-time structured advanced pharmacy practice experiences at off-campus pharmacy practice sites.
The Admissions Committee rely heavily on interview criteria, objective data, performance in required math & science courses, overall GPA, PCAT scores, and ACT or SAT scores are significant. Students are admitted to the professional Pharm.D. program in the Fall and Spring. Approximately eighty-five students are admitted to the professional Pharm.D. program each year.
Faculty in the COP provide instruction in all the courses in the professional Pharm.D. program. Graduates of the COP at SWOSU continue to perform above average on the NAPLEX, the national licensing examination for pharmacy.

The Doctor of Pharmacy program at the University of Rhode Island, College of Pharmacy is a 0/6 program. While most of our first-year students come directly from high school, we sometimes accept a small number of transfer students into the first professional year (P1) of the curriculum. Please note, we are not accepting transfer applicants for the Fall of 2019. The 6-year curriculum stresses critical thinking, active learning, and clinical experience to prepare you for practice in a variety of professional settings. Students have the opportunity to take professional electives that will advance their knowledge in different areas of pharmacy, including hospital, clinical (e.g. geriatrics, pediatrics, palliative care), manufacturing, managed care, drug analysis, administration, and research. The clinical portion of the program provides students with hands-on experience in hospitals, nursing homes, community pharmacies, government institutions, home healthcare settings, and other industries. We will work with you to place you in early and advanced experience practice sites that are aligned with your educational and career goals.
Graduates of our program have a strong record of passing the national licensing examination (NAPLEX). Average scores over the past five years are above the 90 percentages for graduates taking the exam for the first time. Amongst graduates of the last five years, more than 92.5% reported pharmacy related employment by September following graduation on their AACP graduating student survey. For the class of 2018, 38% of graduates were accepted to either a residency or fellowship trainging program. Job responsibilities vary from staff pharmacists, manager, clinical specialist, consultant, executive, to professor. Ninety-two percent of graduates indicate that they would select the URI College of Pharmacy if they were starting their pharmacy programs over again.

The University of Charleston School of Pharmacy offers student pharmacists a technology-infused, dynamic, and rigorous curriculum that prepares graduates to practice in today’s rapidly changing health care environment. Our students are trained to know about the body, medications, and what happens when medications enter both a healthy and diseased body. From a state of the art facility, to an in-house patient care clinic, the UCSOP makes it possible for students to participate in delivering pharmacy services to real patient’s just steps away from their academic classroom and labs. From the beginning, we envisioned a different kind of school of pharmacy — one where the role of pharmacy was shaped by community-focused students and caring, hands-on faculty in an intimate environment.
The UCSOP uses a holistic admissions process to identify talented, qualified, and committed individuals through a competitive admissions process. Each applicant’s academic background and achievement, test scores, letters of recommendation, and more are reviewed.
