Program Description

Well-trained pharmacists are always in demand. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, positions for pharmacists will rise 17 percent by 2018. This growth is fueled by the increasing use of prescription drugs by an aging population; scientific advances leading to the introduction of new drugs; and pharmacists’ growing involvement in patient care.
If you’re interested in a rewarding career as a pharmacist, discover the entry-level Doctor of Pharmacy Degree Program (Pharm.D.) at St. John’s University. Offered by our College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences — one of the leading schools of its kind — the program is designed to provide students with the clinical and academic skills and knowledge needed to deliver outstanding patient care in all pharmacy settings.
Students begin with the analytical and communications skills made possible by a broad liberal arts foundation. This is combined with pharmacy coursework, introduced early in the program. In their final four years, students gain an intensive foundation in the basic and applied pharmaceutical and clinical sciences.
In keeping with the metropolitan, Catholic and Vincentian mission of the University, students gain first-hand clinical experience serving diverse, often needy communities at more than 200 sites throughout the New York area.
In addressing our Global mission, pharmacy students can participate in the University’s Discover the World – Pharmacy program in either the second or sixth year of the program.

Program Description

Our six-year professional program leads to the Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree and is grounded in the basic and clinical sciences with an emphasis on patient-centered care. The program comprises two years of preprofessional study followed by four years of professional pharmacy school. Preprofessional courses in the biological, physical, and social sciences and the humanities prepare students to enter 21st-century pharmacy practice as informed, well-rounded citizens.

Clinical experiences begin in the first professional year and progress through all four years, with advanced practice experiences at outstanding teaching and community hospitals, community pharmacies, managed care settings, the pharmaceutical industry, and other specialty practice sites.

Few schools can match the breadth and diversity of our clinical experience program. The Pharm.D. program is structured to develop the high levels of theoretical knowledge and professional skill required in this demanding profession. Our students learn to be independent thinkers, creative problem solvers, and compassionate care givers. Through rigorous coursework and patient-centered professional practice, students become highly knowledgeable about all aspects of drug therapy and highly effective in counseling patients and collaborating with health care professionals. Our graduates are well prepared for professional pharmacy practice in a variety of settings-the community, medical institutions, health care facilities, and the pharmaceutical industry, among others-as well as graduate or professional study.

The University of Rhode Island Quick Facts

Duration: 0-6/7 Years Courses: Faculty: 59
Est. Applications: 631 Acceptance Rate: 21% Est. Class Size: 132

Program Description

The Doctor of Pharmacy program at the University of Rhode Island, College of Pharmacy is a 0/6 program.  While most of our first-year students come directly from high school, we sometimes accept a small number of transfer students into the first professional year (P1) of the curriculum. Please note, we are not accepting transfer applicants for the Fall of 2019.  The 6-year curriculum stresses critical thinking, active learning, and clinical experience to prepare you for practice in a variety of professional settings. Students have the opportunity to take professional electives that will advance their knowledge in different areas of pharmacy, including hospital, clinical (e.g. geriatrics, pediatrics, palliative care), manufacturing, managed care, drug analysis, administration, and research. The clinical portion of the program provides students with hands-on experience in hospitals, nursing homes, community pharmacies, government institutions, home healthcare settings, and other industries. We will work with you to place you in early and advanced experience practice sites that are aligned with your educational and career goals.
Graduates of our program have a strong record of passing the national licensing examination (NAPLEX). Average scores over the past five years are above the 90 percentages for graduates taking the exam for the first time. Amongst graduates of the last five years, more than 92.5% reported pharmacy related employment by September following graduation on their AACP graduating student survey.   For the class of 2018, 38% of graduates were accepted to either a residency or fellowship trainging program.  Job responsibilities vary from staff pharmacists, manager, clinical specialist, consultant, executive, to professor. Ninety-two percent of graduates indicate that they would select the URI College of Pharmacy if they were starting their pharmacy programs over again.
